The creators of Game of Thrones David Benioff and DB Weiss will write and produce a new Star Wars saga, Disney announced on Tuesday.
This saga will be independent of the main plot that began in 1977 with Star Wars: A new hope and that will end in 2019 with Star Wars: Episode IX, as well as the trilogy recently announced by Rian Johnson.
“David and Dan are two of the best storytellers working today, “said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, in a statement. “His handling of the complex characters, the depth of the story and the mythological richness will open new paths and push Star Wars in incredibly exciting ways.”
Disney has not announced the date on which the new Star Wars films will be released. According to Bob Iger, CEO of the company, Benioff and Weiss made the proposal a while ago and, although both had developed their career in television, they were not interested in taking the idea to the small screen. Neither details of the story were revealed.
David Benioff and DB Weiss open a stage just before closing another: the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones is in the shooting phase and will be issued in 2019.
